Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the daybreak 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 And enter among My [righteous] servants 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
