The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the declining star, 1 your companion is not in error nor has he gone astray. 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 being on the higher horizon, 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart was not untrue in (making him see) what he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it! 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 for indeed he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 as well as [in] Manat, the third and last [of this triad]? 20 Why - for yourselves [you would choose only] male offspring, whereas to Him [you assign] female: 21 That is indeed an unjust division. 22 These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord! 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 To Allah belong both the Next World and the present. 25
