The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes); 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 We shall facilitate the path to affliction 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 and to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life. 13 I have warned you then about a raging Fire: 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
