The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 Lord of power and wisdom. So he acquired poise and balance, 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 then came down close 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 And verily he saw him yet another time 13 By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary, 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 And another, the third (goddess), Manat? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 That indeed is a division unfair! 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
