The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise, and warn, 2 And your Lord glorify 3 And your clothing purify 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 and sons standing before him, 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 Nay, verily, it is against Our messages that he knowingly, stubbornly sets himself 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 Then looked he, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
