The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 save those that pray 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
