The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night when it covers the day, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
