The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you his illustrious son! 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
