Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Clear Book 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
