The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 Save worshippers. 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
