The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 And the moon when she followeth him, 2 And by oath of the day when it reveals it 3 The night when it covers him over, 4 by the heavens and that (Power) which established them, 5 And the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 And by oath of the soul and by oath of Him Who made it proper. 7 and inspired it to lewdness and godfearing! 8 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, 9 And he fails that corrupts it! 10 The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing, 11 when the most wicked of them broke forth, 12 then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' 13 But they gave him the lie, and hamstrung the she-camel. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime and razed their city to the ground. 14 And He fears not its consequence. 15
