The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 except those that pray 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
