The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the night, when it envelops, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 So, I warn you of the blazing Fire. 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
