۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 When he asked his father and his people, "What are these images to which you are so devoted?" 52 They said, "We found our fathers worshippers of them." 53 He said, “Indeed you all – you and your forefathers – were in open error.” 54 They exclaimed, "Have you brought the Truth or are you joking?" 55 He said, “In fact, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the One Who created them; and I am of those who testify to it.” 56 "And by Allah, I shall plot a plan (to destroy) your idols after you have gone away and turned your backs." 57 And then he broke those [idols] to pieces, [all] save the biggest of them, so that they might [be able to] turn to it. 58 (When the people came to the temple and saw the broken idols) they asked each other, "Who has done this to our gods? He certainly is an unjust person". 59 They said, "We heard a youth talk of them: He is called Abraham." 60 They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may bear witness." 61 They said, "Have you done this to our gods, O Abraham?" 62 He said: Surely (some doer) has done it; the chief of them is this, therefore ask them, if they can speak. 63 So they turned to themselves and said, "Surely ye are the ones in the wrong!" 64 Then their minds were turned upside down, and they said: "You know well that they do not speak." 65 Abraham said, "So, do you worship something instead of God that can neither benefit you nor harm you? 66 Fie on you and all that ye worship instead of Allah! Have ye then no sense? 67 They said: 'Burn him and help your gods, if you are going to do anything' 68 We said: "O fire, become coolness and safety for Abraham." 69 They had devised an evil plan (against Abraham), but We turned it into failure." 70 And We delivered him and Lut to the land wherein We had placed Our blessings for the worlds. 71 We bestowed Isaac and then Jacob on him as an additional boon and We made all of them righteous. 72 and made them leaders who would guide [others] in accordance with Our behest: for We inspired them [with a will] to do good works, and to be constant in prayer, and to dispense charity: and Us [alone] did they worship. 73 And Lot -- to him We gave judgment and knowledge; and we delivered him from the city that had been doing deeds of corruption; they were an evil people, truly ungodly; 74 And We admitted him to Our Mercy, truly, he was of the righteous. 75
