The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 And for him who hoarded wealth and remained carefree, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
