The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Save worshippers. 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
