These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
