O you who have wrapped up in your garments! 1 Keep watch all the night except some, 2 Half of it,- or a little less, 3 Or add to it, and recite the Quran as it ought to be recited. 4 Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word. 5 Surely getting up at night is the best means of subduing the self and is more suitable for uprightness in speech. 6 True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties: 7 But keep in remembrance the name of thy Lord and devote thyself to Him whole-heartedly. 8 The Lord of the East and the West-- there is no god but He-- therefore take Him for a protector. 9 And bear thou with patience whatsoever they say, and depart from them with a becoming departure. 10 And leave them to Me – these wealthy deniers – and give them some respite. 11 We have prepared for them fetters, flaming fire, 12 and a food that chokes, and a grievous chastisement. 13 On the Day when the earth with all its mountains quake and the mountains become heaps of shifting sand. 14 We have sent to you, (O men!) a messenger, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Firon disobeyed the apostle, so We laid on him a violent hold. 16 How, then, will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, on the day which shall make children grey-headed? 17 [the Day] on which the skies shall be rent asunder, [and] His promise [of resurrection] fulfilled? 18 Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way. 19
