We also sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said, 'Surely, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being.' 46 But when he came to them with Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) behold! They laughed at them. 47 And not an Ayah (sign, etc.) We showed them but it was greater than its fellow, and We seized them with torment, in order that they might turn [from their polytheism to Allah's Religion (Islamic Monotheism)]. 48 They said, "Magician, pray to your Lord for us through your covenant with Him (If he saves us from the torment), we shall certainly seek guidance". 49 Then when We had removed from them the torment, behold they were breaking their promise. 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: 'O my people, do I not possess the kingdom of Egypt, and these rivers flowing beneath me? What, do you not see? 51 Am I (not) better than him who is contemptible, and cannot even express himself clearly? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 Thus he incited his people to levity, and they obeyed him: for, behold, they were people depraved! 54 And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all. 55 and made them a thing of the past and an example for those who would come after them. 56
