Dawn (Al-Fajr)
30 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Night (Al-Layl) before The Forenoon (Al-Duhaa)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 for, verily, thy Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 And come into My Paradise! 30
