Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)? 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world? 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 [It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me' 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 O the contented soul! 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
