The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 except those that pray 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 Are free of blame, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
