The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the declining star, 1 your companion is not in error nor has he gone astray. 2 nor does he speak out of his desire. 3 This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 Of might, he (Gabriel) stood firm 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 Indeed he saw him a second time, 13 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit, 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 What! unto you the males and unto Him the females? 21 That indeed were an unfair division! 22 These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have what he coveteth? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
