The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Save worshippers. 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 who guard their privates 29 Are free of blame, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
