He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 Because the blind man had come in his august presence. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 To him do you address yourself. 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 And hath fear, 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 uplifted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes (angels). 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 Of what did He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He causes him to die, and puts him in his grave; 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 Then let mankind look at his food - 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 and vines and edible plants, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruit and grass - 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 on that Day each person will flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 Laughing, joyous. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 with darkness overspread: 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
