A numerous company from among the first, 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 "We are ruined, 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
