The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
