When they came to Joseph he made his brother his guest, and said: "I am your brother. So do not grieve for what they had done." 69 And [later,] when he had provided them with their provisions, he placed the [King's] drinking-cup in his brother's camel-pack. And [as they were leaving the city,] a herald called out: "O you people of the caravan! Verily, you are thieves! 70 They said while they were facing them: What is it that you miss? 71 'We are missing the goblet of the king' he replied. 'Whosoever restores it shall have a camelload, that I guarantee' 72 (The brothers) said: "By Allah! well ye know that we came not to make mischief in the land, and we are no thieves!" 73 They said, “And what shall be the punishment for it, if you are liars?” 74 They replied, "The penalty should be that he in whose saddlebag it is found, should be held [as bondman] to atone for the crime. That is how we punish the wrongdoers." 75 So he searched their saddle-bags before his brother's, then produced the cup from his brother's bag. That is how We planned an excuse for Joseph, for under the law of the king he could not detain his brother unless God so willed. We raise the status of whom We please. Over every man of knowledge there is one more knowing. 76 ۞ They said, “If he steals, then indeed his brother has stolen before”; so Yusuf kept this in his heart and did not reveal it to them; he replied within himself, “In fact, you are in a worse position; and Allah well knows the matters you fabricate.” 77 They said, “O governor! He has a very aged father, so take one of us in his stead; indeed we witness your favours.” 78 He replied, "God forbid! How could I take someone in place of the thief? In doing so I would be committing injustice." 79
