The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise and warn 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 and purify your robes, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 So that is a tough day. 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 And children to be by his side! 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 and who still desires more. 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then he looked, 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
