The people of 'Ad, too, rejected the messengers. 123 When their brother Hud said unto them: fear ye not? 124 I am a trustworthy messenger for you: 125 so fear you God, and obey you me. 126 I ask no recompense of you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 127 What, do you build on every prominence a sign, sporting, 128 “And prefer strong palaces, that perhaps you may live for ever?” 129 “And when you apprehend someone, you seize him mercilessly?” 130 So fear Allah and obey me. 131 fear Him who has aided you with all that you know -- 132 He has given you flocks and sons, 133 gardens, and springs. 134 “Indeed I fear upon you the punishment of a Great Day.” 135 They said: "It is the same to us whether you preach or be not of those who preach. 136 this is nothing but the habit of the ancients, 137 And we are not going to be punished. 138 And so they gave him the lie: and thereupon We destroyed them. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 139 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 140
