The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 And your clothing purify 4 and defilement flee! 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaves and spares no one and nothing. 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
