Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
HaMeem 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29

When reading the Colorful Quran in English transliterated Arabic mode, you may not notice that there is an algorithm designed to match the pause requirements of the original Arabic scripture, (waqf signs). As you may know, the original Arabic Quran has five main types of pauses, (waqf) signs. (1) Compulsory break, where the transliteration uses a full stop. (2) Optional pause with the preference for pausing, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a probability of two thirds. (3) Optional stop with an equal preference for pausing and resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a half-half probability. (4) Optional pause with the preference for resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a chance of one third. (5) Attraction pause, also called hugging, or (mu’anaka) sign, where it is compulsory to pause at either one of two nearby positions, but not both; where the transliteration inserts a comma at either one of the two locations with a half-half probability.
