Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 And [by] ten nights 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Join My worshipers and 29 And enter into My garden. 30
