Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Kaf. Ha. Ya. Ain. Sad. 1 This is an account of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah 2 when he called upon his Lord in low tones, saying, 3 He said: My Lord! surely my bones are weakened and my head flares with hoariness, and, my Lord! I have never been unsuccessful in my prayer to Thee: 4 And surely I fear my cousins after me, and my wife is barren, therefore grant me from Thyself an heir, 5 Who should inherit me and inherit from the children of Yaqoub, and make him, my Lord, one in whom Thou art well pleased. 6 [He was told], "O Zechariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name." 7 He submitted, “My Lord – how can I have a son whereas my wife is barren and I have reached infirmity due to old age?” 8 (The angel) answered: "Thus will it be. Your Lord said: 'This is easy for Me; for when I brought you into being you were nothing.' 9 (Zakariya) said: "O my Lord! give me a Sign." "Thy Sign," was the answer, "Shall be that thou shalt speak to no man for three nights, although thou art not dumb." 10 Then Zachariah came forth from the shrine to his people and told them by signs to glorify the Lord morning and evening. 11 (We said): 'O John, hold fast to the Book', and We bestowed on him judgment while yet a child 12 And tenderness from Our presence and purity, and he was God-fearing. 13 And dutiful towards his parents, and he was neither an arrogant nor disobedient (to Allah or to his parents). 14 And Peace be unto him the day he was born and the day he dieth and the day he will be raised up alive. 15
