Thamud denied the messengers 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 In gardens and springs. 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said, “This is the she-camel – one day shall be her turn to drink, and on the other appointed day, shall be your turn.” 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
