A company of the former peoples 39 and a good many of later times. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 neither cool nor good. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
