The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise and warn, 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 Pollution shun! 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 and to whom I have granted resources vast, 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then looked he, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
