(The tribe of) A’ad denied the Noble Messengers. 123 Their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear God? 124 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 125 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 126 And I ask of you no hire therefor: my hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 127 "Do you build useless monuments on every mountain 128 And take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you might abide eternally? 129 When you assault, you assault like tyrants. 130 So fear you God, and obey you me; 131 and [thus] be conscious of Him who has [so] amply provided you with all [the good] that you might think of 132 amply provided you with flocks, and children, 133 gardens and fountains. 134 I fear the punishment of a terrible day for you. 135 They replied: 'It is the same to us whether you admonish or whether you are not one of the admonishers. 136 This is naught but a custom of the ancients; 137 "And we are not the ones to receive Pains and Penalties!" 138 So they rejected him, and We destroyed them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 139 Surely your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 140
