The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers the punishment that none can avert. 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 But We see it very near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 But not so the worshippers 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
