Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 is there not in this strong evidence for a man of sense? 5 Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)? 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 for, verily, thy Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 Serene soul, 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Join My worshipers and 29 Enter then My garden." 30
