[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 You are nothing but a man like us. Bring us a token if you speak the truth." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they killed her, and then they became regretful. 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
