The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 Eager to roast; 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Except those who pray, 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 who guard their privates 29 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
