The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night enshrouding 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 Who had denied and turned away. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
