A crowd of earlier generations 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
