The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)

Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
