We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said: 'I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds' 46 Yet when he brought forth Clear Signs from Us, then lo, they burst into laughter. 47 although each sign that We showed them was weightier than the preceding one: and [each time] We took them to task through suffering, so that they might return [to Us]. 48 And they said [to Musa (Moses)]: "O you sorcerer! Invoke your Lord for us according to what He has covenanted with you. Verily, We shall guide ourselves (aright)." 49 But when We removed from them the chastisement, behold, they broke their troth. 50 And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see? 51 Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear? 52 Why were bracelets of gold not bestowed upon him? Why did a retinue of angels not accompany him as attendants?” 53 So he made his people unsteady, and they obeyed him; surely they were an ungodly people. 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 And We made them a precedent (as a lesson for those coming after them), and an example to later generations. 56
