If anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of (Allah) Most Gracious, We appoint for him an evil one, to be an intimate companion to him. 36 Such (evil ones) really hinder them from the Path, but they think that they are being guided aright! 37 To the extent that when the disbeliever will be brought to Us, he will say to his devil, “Alas if only there was the distance* of east and west, between you and me!” so what an evil companion** he is! (* Had I not listened to you. **They will be bound together in chains.) 38 It shall not profit you today, since you did evil, that you are partners in the chastisement. 39 What! can you then make the deaf to hear or guide the blind and him who is in clear error? 40 Whether We take thee away, We shall take vengeance upon them, 41 Rather We will certainly show you that which We have promised them; for surely We are the possessors of full power over them. 42 Follow devotedly that which is revealed to you. You are certainly on the right path. 43 And lo! it is in truth a Reminder for thee and for thy folk; and ye will be questioned. 44 And ask thou Our apostles whom We sent before thee: appointed We gods, beside the Compassionate, to be worshipped? 45
