۞ We bestowed aforetime on Abraham his rectitude of conduct, and well were We acquainted with him. 51 When he asked his father and his people, "What are these images to which you are so devoted?" 52 They replied, "We found our fathers worshipping them". 53 He said, “Indeed you all – you and your forefathers – were in open error.” 54 They said: Bringest thou unto us the truth, or art thou some jester? 55 He said: Aye! your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth Who created them, and as to that I am of the witnesses. 56 Abraham said to himself, "By God! I will devise a plan against their idols when they are away." 57 And then he broke those [idols] to pieces, [all] save the biggest of them, so that they might [be able to] turn to it. 58 They said, "Who has done this to our gods? Indeed, he is of the wrongdoers." 59 Some said, "We heard a young man, called Abraham, talking about them." 60 They said: Then bring him (hither) before the people's eyes that they may testify. 61 [And when he came.] they asked: "Hast thou done this to our gods, O Abraham?" 62 He said: But this, their chief hath done it. So question them, if they can speak. 63 So they returned to [blaming] themselves and said [to each other], "Indeed, you are the wrongdoers." 64 Then they turned to themselves (their first thought and said): "Indeed you [Ibrahim (Abraham)] know well that these (idols) speak not!" 65 He said, 'What, and do you serve, apart from God, that which profits you nothing; neither hurts you? 66 Fie on you and on what you serve besides Allah; what! do you not then understand? 67 They said: Burn him and help your gods, if you are going to do (anything). 68 We said, 'O fire, be coolness and safety for Abraham!' 69 They wished to entrap him, but We made them greater losers. 70 And We delivered him and Lut to the land wherein We had placed Our blessings for the worlds. 71 And We bestowed him Ishaq, and Yaqub the grandson; and We made all of them worthy of Our proximity. 72 And We made them leaders to guide (the people) by Our command; and We inspired them to perform good deeds and observe their moral obligations and pay the zakat; and they obeyed Us. 73 And to Lut, too, We gave Judgment and Knowledge, and We saved him from the town which practised abominations: truly they were a people given to Evil, a rebellious people. 74 We encompassed him in Our mercy; he was a righteous man. 75
