The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
