The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the night, when it envelops, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;- 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 none shall enter it but the most wicked, 15 Who had denied and turned away. 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
